Almost all of us have heard jokes about this as well. Despite all of our 'knowledge' of Chinese cuisine we fail to realize the Chinese are consuming endangered species!!! In particular, the alligator sinensis, a critically endangered species in its natural habitat, with only about 150 thought to be living in the wild.

So how can they do it??? Legally!??

Well the Huifu Fine-food Restaurant has obtained a permit from Forestry Ministry for serving meat from reptiles raised at a breeding center. How sneaky.

But these alligators are extremely endangered!!!!

"That's ok though," said Wu Xiaobing, an expert on Chinese alligators at the Wuhu-based College of Life Science, Anhui Normal University. Seeing how the breeding centers have around 10,000 alligators on site with about 1,500 new-borns annually.

But how does alligator taste?

Unfortunately the article does not go into too much detail but the article does point out that the most recommended dishes were alligator steak and soup. "Both of them keep the natural taste of the alligator meat," said a restaurant staffer (who failed to give his name).

What immediately jumps out at me, regarding this article, is the huge range between the number of alligators in the wild and the number of alligators in captivity. It seems to me that since the number of annual alligator births in captivity exceeds the total number of alligators in the wild 10 times, the breeding centers could easily release a number of these alligators back to their natural environment. Eventually, by doing what I just stated, these alligators might be removed from the endangered species list.

Here is a link to the article below:
http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2006/12/01/asia/AS_ODD_China_Alligator_Soup.php

Smoking Ban Increases Sales!

It's true! For Scotland's Mitchells and Butlers, who are pub owners that control a large portion of the bar market in that area. This effect is shown mostly for food-based pubs in the area. After all this time Bellamy was cleared of the charges on November 29, 2006.

Bellamy claims he was slapped during the argument with the women (however he is not counter-sueing) and that the officers who responded to the case handled it wrong because they were "jealous of him".

Jealous? Maybe the officers were, or maybe Bellamy is just a cocky, rich footballer with the money to get out of a court case. We all know that money buys everything (arguably, happiness as well). One thing that goes without question is that money (if one has enough of it) can get an individual out of any charge including murder (O.J. Simpson), rape (R. The article does not specify which license) suspended for 45 days due to 12 people being stabbed, cut, or beaten in a two-week span!!!!

Two-week span!!!

With his license suspended, Micklos will have to shut down Club Malibu for those 45 days which occur during the holidays (the busy season). Liquor board Commissioner Edward Smith Jr. said he would like Micklos to be "put out on the street." understandably so, considering there were 12 violent acts committed within his club in two weeks!!! I know I'm restating the number of stabbings a lot but that's only because I find it to be completely ridiculous and an outrage!!

Police said that during some of the October 21 beatings/stabbings, the injurees called 911 from restrooms stating that they had barricaded themselves in there to avoid further attacks. Upon police arrival, the officers noticed "blood on practically every surface" including floors, walls, and doors.

The good news: Micklos says he plans to sell the property for $1.3 million as soon as possible.

The bad news: No one has bought his property yet! Hopefully, if someone does, they can make a complete transformation from a violent, maniac bar to a nice place to do whatever, whether it be to eat, drink, or even a museum!

All I have left to say is that I hope the new owner or Micklos buys some metal detectors for the entrances!!

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/local/bal-md.malibu17nov17,0,6137430.story?coll=bal-local-headlines

Fingers (Out of Indianapolis). . . Not Guilty!!

Quinton (Fingers) Willford pleaded not guilty after an arrest was made regarding his resisting law enforcement and public intoxication. Fingers, whom appears to be an escape artist, somehow slipped out of his handcuffs and ran away from his arresting police officers. After "losing sight of him" the officers located Fingers on Lafayette Road.

This all started when Fingers (ok, I think the nickname is funny) allegedly entered Don Victor's without paying a cover charge. After Fingers became increasingly belligerent, Don Victor's security guard (who happens to be an off duty police officer) is forced to call (his buddies) the police. Eventually resulting in a funny story and an arrest.

But Fingers isn't scared at all!!

"And now I'm going to be a millionaire!" stated Fingers while being arrested. Apparently Fingers believes he can sue the Indiana Pacers organization after a so-called run in with the Pacers a month ago that allegedly resulted with Stephen Jackson kicking Fingers in his head. Fingers also plans to sue his arresting officers.

Smart guy? Who knows. But I do find it funny that in this article from the Indy Star goes into detail about Fingers stating "Willford, who has short arms and deformed hands"! What's that about? Did this Willford (Fingers) guy previously have the nickname "Fingers" or did the Indianapolis police give he the nickname as a joke about his "deformed hands" and his ability to sneak out of handcuffs?!

Check out the link below to view the entire article.
http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061117/LOCAL/611170489/1006/LOCAL

Worst Brawl Ever!!

Chicago police claim they were witness to the worst brawl they had ever seen on Friday, November 17, 2006. After the fight, one person was hospitalized and six arrests were made. The fight occured outside the restaurant El Charro. Furniture, glass, and guns were all employed as weapons during this altercation.

What strikes me as strange about this story is that it happened inside a restaurant, not at a bar. Unfortunately a time was not given in the article to specify whether it was at 3:00 p.m. or perhaps 3:00 a.m. because the restaurant could have had a bar inside it that remained open until the late hours of the night.

But what if there was no bar in the restaurant?? What's a couple million dollars to these people!
Based in Boston, Bain is also owns 24% of Burger King's sales and a 25% share in Domino's Pizza Inc.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aE4Z0O5nZ6TI&refer=home

Canadian Kills U.S. Sailor

A fight broke out inside a bar in Halifax, Canada, and then spilled out onto the street. Customers instantly began fleeing the premises fearing food contamination and the mice as well.

As we all know, mice are terrifying!!!

Well everyone was concerned about the mice except for Mr. Farr. In fact, Mr. Farr was quoted saying, "To be honest, it didn't bother me. I was more concerned the food was taking so long to come out - that's why we moved on to somewhere else. If they were coming from the kitchen I'd have been more concerned, but I don't think they were."

More concerned with the food taking too long as opposed to rodents running throughout the restaurant!?!?! Too bad there isn't a picture of this gentleman because I'm betting that he most likely does not have all of his teeth and probably doesn't shower on a regular basis.

Eddie Gershon, spokesman for JD Wetherspoon, stated, "The problem is definitely far less problematic than it has been in the past."

I wonder just how bad it was in the past. Afterall, water is the essence of life. Without water there would not be life....anywhere.

What is the amount? Six glasses of water a day?? I can't remember. I believe that it is recommended that everyone drink about six glasses of water a day though.

Ok, now for the story.

According to Borough Manager, Daniel Stonehouse, the Silhouette Showbar, in Coopersbury, Pennsylvania, has an unpaid water bill for over $700 and due to this their water has been turned off. Additionally, it is illegal for their business to be occupied without water.

They must of had some major wet T-shirt contests to run up a bill that high!! I mean, come on! Who orders a water at a strip club?? Exactly.

Additionally, the borough is also trying to shut down a bar within the Silhouette Showbar known as Club Kama Sutra, which has been offering Saturday night sex parties. Wait, sex parties!! How is that legal?? I'm puzzled by all of this.

For more on this story please visit the Web site http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/bizarre/4221622.html

Canadians Have Taser Guns Too.

Last September, a B.C. (British Columbia) wide reciever was tasered outside a sushi bar and ended up in the emergency room afterward due to his taserings. Apparently, police were trying to question T. J. Acree (the taseree) regarding an assault on a 19-year-old man but Acree was not cooperating with police. Bad idea. Acree was then tasered twice.

However, dispite all the mayhem, the sushi club's spokesman said, "Acree is a valued member of the club and a good player and someone who remains with us."

So I guess there is not any bad blood between Acree and the sushi club. Which means a gun was brought in. Pretty scary. I really hope better security measures are taken from here on out by that nightclub.

Most of us go out to the bar/club to have a good time, meet up with friends, maybe meet a nice person to date (take home), and have some drinks. Most of the time it's without terrible consequences. However, there are also those people (maniacs) that go out to the bars/clubs not to have a good time, but to do harm to others or look for a fight. You know, those people that deem it necessary to act like "the man/woman". The type of people that purposely bump into you, stare you down, and basically treat everyone with total disrespect. Those people are the ones to watch out for.

Don't get me wrong, sometimes it's the good people that drink to much and start the problems too. I believe it should be up to their friends to "babysit" the out-of-control friends that are there with them if they (the out-of-control ones) can't behave and act like adults.

That's the main theme here, people need to act like adults. Adults don't fight. Adults behave themselves. Children, on the other hand, fight and misbehave. The thing is, children aren't allowed in clubs and bars; you have to be 21!!! By that age, everyone should be an adult! Unfortunatly that isn't the case; which is why there is a need for security.

Restaurants not only feed the masses but pave the roads to get there!

In the small town of Surprise (I'm not making this up, it's a real town!), Arizona, around 100 new restaurant openings are predicted to to earn the city a record $3,000,000 of its 3.2% restaurant and hotel sales tax. Which is $1,000,000 more than the city had been making off the tax the past several years.

What to do with all that extra money?? Blow it?? Put it in the politician's pockets? Or use it to better the city??

Surprise city officials think the latter of the options.

The extra revenue earned from the restaurant industry will be funneled into the city's general fund, which pays for street repair, trash collection, and police and fire services. Some of the money is also used to pave roads to get to the restaurants (which seems fair!).

The small town of Surprise surely is quiet a surprise considering its booming population; up from 31,000 in 2000, to 100,000 residents currently!!!

And there's more to this than what I've commented on, check out the rest of the article here:
http://www.azcentral.com/community/westvalley/articles/0920gl-nwvrest20Z20.html

What do you mean I can't open a strip club???

Ever thought about opening a strip club (gentleman's club, if you insist on being politically correct)? Well it may not be a bad idea. If you find the right location in the right market then you could make it big.

But what if the city/state forbids you to open a gentleman's club?? What then??

Well you sue the city/state!!!

That's just what businessman Bob Davis did in Seattle. A little history on Pizza Hut.

In 1997, Pizza Hut was acquired by one of the true giants of international business: PepsiCo, Inc. As part of the PepsiCo corporate family, Pizza Hut shared its leadership position with products like Pepsi-Cola soft drinks and Frito-Lay snack foods. In October 1997, PepsiCo left the restaurant businesses (Pizza Hut, KFC and Taco Bell) and Tricon was founded. May 16, 2002 Tricon officially became YUM! Brands with the addition of two new brands, Long John Silver's and A&W. YUM! Brands is now the parent company Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, KFC, A&W and Long John Silver's and is the world’s largest restaurant company in terms of restaurants with more than 34,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries and territories!

Is it just me or does "Yum!" seem pretty tacky? I believe Yum! could have chosen a better name. But who am I to comment about Yum!? I'm just a young college kid making $12,000/yr.!

Anyways...

Yum! reported total sales for the 16 weeks to September 11 down 0.5% compared to the same period a year ago to $97.7 million. New Zealand operations produced sales of $88.5 million, down 0.9%, while sales in Australia were up $0.3 million largely due to movements in the exchange rate. Pizza Hut New Zealand continued to be hit by a combination of cost increases, tightening economic conditions, and competition, the company said. Non-trading costs would be significantly higher than a year ago with write-downs anticipated on the Pizza Hut Victorian business as the process to sell stores continued. Group net profit after tax and before non-trading items for the first half of the financial year was still expected to be between $2.5 million and $3 million.

For the fifth consecutive quarter, same store sales grew at KFC, with sales of $54.4 million, up 4.6% for the quarter on both a total sales and a same store basis, the company said. Sixteen stores had been completely re-vamped to date, with store numbers at 86 after two closures over the quarter. The company was on target to complete a further six store refurbishments by the end of the financial year and open one new store in Hamilton.

Continued difficult trading conditions and competitive pressures for Pizza Hut New Zealand saw sales for the quarter of $24.9 million, down 14.7% on a year ago, and down 16.5% on a same store basis. Efforts to counter the trading shortfall included an increased focus on costs and improving in-store operations, a targeted marketing programme and a management restructure. Store numbers reduced by one over the quarter to 105.

Starbucks Coffee had its 11th quarter of growth with sales of $9.2 million, up 13.1%, while same store growth was 2.5%. Store numbers were up to 45 with the opening of a new location in Sylvia Park, Auckland.

The Pizza Hut Victoria business continued to be difficult as the company proceeded with its exit strategy. Total sales for the quarter were $8.8 million U.S., the company said. A 5.1% downfall from a year ago and down 4.1% on a same store basis, but due to exchange rate movements, reported sales were up 3.9% to $9.2 million. Store numbers remained at 50 as the company finalised disposal arrangements for the first 20 stores. For the year-to-date Restaurant Brands' sales totalled $172 million, up $1.4 million or 0.8% on the first half of the year before. Same store sales were down 1.9%. Restaurant Brands shares closed at $1.07 yesterday having ranged between $1.51 and 94c in the past year.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/story.cfm?c_id=3&ObjectID=10401964

Interesting?? Burks

September 19, 2006
No need for another bar and more alcohol

I have a problem with the installation of a bar/restaurant in the Carson Government Center, and not because it is in a government building. My objection is to another bar in the African-American community. Another source of liquor or alcohol in our community is a continuation of the destructive pattern already in progress. The belief that the sale of one more ounce of alcohol is a positive goal for this community is the pipe dream of selfish men and women whose primary goal is the reward of the almighty dollar.

As an African-American professional living in the Near North vicinity for many years, I can see the gradual deterioration and destruction of the neighborhoods by liquor outlets on many of the corners. For what good reason do we need another outlet for, arguably, the single most destructive force on the African-American family?

I really find it sad that the bar is defined to be such a "nice" place by the investors because there is absolutely nothing nice about alcohol's destruction of brain cells in a population already struggling to erase the gap in the quality of life between this community and the overall society at large. If the Metropolitan Development Commission approves this proposal, we will witness city government assisting in the continued negative assault on the African-American community.

Jesse J. It's one of the freedoms this country has; just like Mr. Burks freedom to speech. Everybody is in business to make money and if someone chooses to open a bar to feed their family or even themselves, good for them. It's their constitutional right.

I understand that alcoholism is a terrible thing that does a great deal of damage to society and to the individual but it is foolish to imply that opening another bar would be responsible for a community's downfall. Furthermore, to refer alcohol-causing destruction specifically to the African-American community seems a little out of line. If in fact a bar does everything Mr. Burks claims it does to the community then wouldn't it do those things to everybody in that community?? Not just the African-Americans.

Notice how he has no problem with the bar that's being built in the Carson Government Center...

Strange??

More and More Foreign-style Restaurants in Shanghai

Recently, there has been a surge of foreign-style restaurants opening and prospering in Shanghai, China. The best part is, it was proven that they (the customers) were the ones who put the object (in this case a mouse) in their food!!! "Haha!!" I say to those cheap, scandelous morons!!

Ok, now here's the scenario, A 23 year-old man out of Virginia and his mother visited a Cracker Barrel (You know, that place you go to when you want a good meal...) and put a dead mouse in their soup. Immediatly after they filed a $500,000 lawsuit against Cracker Barrel. Now obviously people can't do such a thing and expect to get away with it without an investigation(Well I guess some people expect to get away with it), especially with such a high dollar lawsuit filed to the supreme court!!

Anyways, a forensic scientist found that the mouse did not contain soup in its lungs and had not been cooked.

Now his mother and him have to spend a year in jail and pay a $2500 fine!!!!

Legal system one, criminals zero!

Check out the article http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2006/09/14/america/NA_GEN_US_Mouse_in_Soup.php

You're fat..... You're fired!!

A New York restaurant is being sued for 15 million dollars by two female servers who claim their boss fired them because they were too fat. The lawsuit filed in Manhattan's state supreme court against the Sutton Place restaurant and bar claims that Kristen McRedmond, 27, and Alexandria Lipton, 25, were subjected to orders to disclose and record their weight, sexual harassment and a hostile work environment before they were fired in July. The women claim that male employees were frequently asking them (and other workers) their weight and jotting their responces down on a notepad. In addition! The women were escorted into the manager's office and asked to step on a scale for a precise weight reading!!!!!

This is absolutly unacceptable!! I find it hard to believe that the managers would subject women to these ridiculous requests and moreover, not consider that what they were doing was absolutely unconstitutional.

I hope these women win their case. However, asking for 15 million dollars!?! That seems excessive. Maybe only 10 million!!! :)

Check out the article here http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,,1872994,00.html

Restaurant Diversity

http://www.restaurant.org discovers that the restaurant and food-serving industry is one of the most diverse American industries being that, they (the restaurant industry) employ more minority managers than any other industry. Also, more than one-quarter of the managers are foreign born!

I don't know what everyone else thinks but I find these statistics to be quite surprising. In a world that appears to be white dominanted as far as in the business heirachy, at least in the US, to have a large amount of foreign born managers is a refreshing breath for me and I would assume many, many others.

In addition, there is a magority of women workers compared to their male counterparts (about 55% are women). So I guess in a so-called male-dominated world the women have surpassed the males at least in this industry. One small step for minorities and women, and one giant leap for man(and women!)kind!!

Equal Employment Opportunity

Richard LataitisDiversity Liaison
325 Broadway R/E/ETLBoulder, CO 80303(303) 497-6523
"Diversity transcends race and gender, affirmative action and Equal Employment Opportunity.
